Meet Pietro Molla
Engineer. Husband. Father. A man of quiet holiness.
Pietro Molla (1912-2010) was an Italian engineer, devoted husband of Saint Gianna Beretta Molla, and the loving father of Pierluigi, Mariolina, Laura and Gianna Emanuela.
Although he never sought recognition, Pietro lived an extraordinary Christian life through the ordinary vocation of marriage and family. His example reminds us that holiness is not reserved for priests and religious alone. God also calls husbands, fathers and lay people to become saints through faithful love, humble service and daily sacrifice.
A Marriage Centred on God
Pietro met Gianna in 1954, and they were married on 24 September 1955.
From the very beginning of their relationship, their love was deeply rooted in God. Their letters reveal a couple who encouraged one another in prayer, entrusted their future to Divine Providence and desired above all to help one another reach Heaven.
Gianna herself recognised Pietro's deep faith. Shortly before their wedding, she wrote that his prayers came "from a heart that has always loved God and served Him in a saintly way," adding that she had much to learn from his example. Later, she told him that his faith and piety inspired her and that she wished she could pray as he did.
A Faithful Husband and Father
Pietro embraced his vocation with quiet fidelity.
As an engineer and industrial director, he worked diligently while remaining devoted to his wife and children. He sought to provide not only materially but spiritually, creating a home where faith, prayer and love were at the centre of family life.
The letters exchanged between Pietro and Gianna reveal a husband who treasured his wife, delighted in his children and continually entrusted his family to God. Even when travelling overseas for work, he wrote tenderly of his longing to return home and composed heartfelt prayers asking God to bless and protect his family.
A Life Marked by Sacrifice
Like many holy lives, Pietro's was marked by profound suffering.
In April 1962, only one week after the birth of their youngest daughter, Gianna Emanuela, Saint Gianna died after choosing a treatment that protected the life of her unborn child. At just forty-nine years of age, Pietro became a widower and the sole parent of four young children.
Two years later, another heartbreaking cross followed. His six-year-old daughter, Mariolina, died after a brief illness.
Despite these immense losses, Pietro remained faithful to God. He continued raising his children with love, carried out his professional responsibilities with integrity and quietly accepted the crosses entrusted to him.
Those who knew him remembered his humility, gratitude and peaceful trust in Divine Providence. The Foundation describes him as a man who accepted suffering without losing hope and whose life was characterised by service, sacrifice and deep faith.
A Quiet Witness to Holiness
Pietro never placed himself at the centre.
Instead, he devoted himself to preserving the memory of Saint Gianna so that others might come to know Christ through her witness. He generously shared her letters, writings and story with the Church, making possible much of what is known about her life today.
Many who encountered Pietro came away convinced that they had met a deeply holy man. After his death in 2010, numerous bishops, priests, religious and lay faithful expressed their belief that Gianna and Pietro had together lived an extraordinary witness to Christian marriage and family life. Gianna Emanuela continues to collect testimonies regarding her father's reputation for holiness and encourages private prayer asking for his intercession.
A Witness for Families Today
The witness of Pietro Molla reminds us that holiness is often hidden in ordinary life.
His fidelity as a husband, his tenderness as a father, his perseverance through grief and his steadfast trust in God's will continue to inspire families around the world.
